Kachikwu Claims ADC Was Formed to Support Atiku’s 2027 Presidential Ambition

Dumebi Kachikwu, a top figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has accused some political leaders of secretly turning the party into a tool to help former Vice President Atiku Abubakar return to power in 2027. He said the party’s recent coalition is not a genuine effort to unite opposition groups but a hidden plan to boost Atiku’s political future.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Kachikwu stated that the new ADC-led opposition coalition, which was launched earlier this month, was created mainly to serve Atiku’s ambition. According to him, it was never truly meant to unite opposition parties against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Earlier in July, Peter Obi—the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate—joined other opposition leaders to introduce the coalition under the ADC’s name. The goal, according to them, was to build a united front to challenge the APC in the next election. But just two days later, Obi publicly confirmed that he would be running for president again in 2027, even though he still belongs to the Labour Party.

Kachikwu reacted by saying Obi has now seen the real intention behind the coalition. He believes Obi understands that the entire structure was built to favour Atiku, and that’s why he might be stepping back. Kachikwu stated, “Since I started warning people about what is going on, the truth has started to show. Even Peter Obi now sees that the coalition was meant to support Atiku.”

He added that other politicians who are thinking of running for president have also realized the same thing. According to Kachikwu, the coalition is not what it appeared to be. “It was never a real coalition,” he said. “It’s just a political vehicle to help Atiku’s 2027 ambition.”

Kachikwu, who has remained a strong critic of the coalition, stressed that he and others would not allow ADC to be used to support Atiku’s campaign. He warned that the upcoming 2027 elections should not be based on class or wealth, where the powerful continue to take advantage of ordinary Nigerians.

He ended by promising to educate Nigerians about their rights and how much political power they truly have. “I will ensure that Nigerians know they can’t be fooled again,” he said. “They have the power to choose their future, and I’ll help them see it.”

This latest accusation adds to the growing tension among opposition parties in Nigeria, especially as the 2027 presidential race begins to heat up.
