Peter Obi’s Possible Return to PDP Gains Momentum
Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, is edging closer to rejoining the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as he engages with top party leaders and the PDP Governors Forum. In a recent closed-door meeting with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Obi discussed the country’s future and the possibility of forming a strong opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Sources revealed that prominent PDP figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have been persuading Obi to return to the party, believing a united opposition could challenge the current government more effectively. Reports suggest Atiku even sought the intervention of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to convince Obi to rejoin the PDP.
Governor Mohammed, who is rumored to have his presidential ambitions, expressed his readiness to work with Obi to strengthen the opposition. He acknowledged Obi’s influence and leadership, stating that unity among opposition figures is necessary to rescue Nigeria from its current economic and social challenges.
Obi, on his part, emphasized the need for urgent discussions on poverty, education, and national development. He highlighted the importance of the North in Nigeria’s recovery, stressing that tackling poverty would be the first step in addressing issues like crime and insecurity.
Meanwhile, there is growing debate within the PDP on Atiku’s potential role in the next election cycle. Some party leaders and allies of Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have called for Atiku to step aside and allow a new leader to take charge, arguing that his chances of securing widespread support have diminished.
As coalition talks continue, Obi’s return to the PDP could reshape the opposition landscape, potentially reviving the party’s chances in the 2027 presidential race.
