Ekiti loses N230m to LG ghost workers annually- Panel
The Ekiti State Government said on Wednesday, it lost N230m annually to ghost workers in the local government areas.
The Co-chairman of the Committee on Local Government Staff Verification, Prof Adio Folayan, explained that “the amount represents the total of N19.3m salaries and emoluments drawn monthly by ghost workers discovered in the just concluded verification”.
Folayan, who is the State Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, stated this in the committee’s report titled, “Ekiti loses N19.3m monthly to local government ghost workers”, submitted to the Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, on Tuesday.
“The 362 absentees (workers) were discovered on the payroll of the local government service after thorough screening and verification”, the report reads partly.
Fayemi said the money recovered would be used to attend to other government obligations to workers.
He said, “This is a matter we need to look into. You can’t sit in Lagos and be earning salaries in Ekiti for work you have not done. But it is our duty to stop that from happening, it is not the duty of the person that is cheating the system”.
