Tunji Disu Named Acting IGP as Kayode Egbetokun Resigns

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun. The presidency said the decision comes at a time when Nigeria is facing significant security challenges and requires steady leadership within the police force.

According to a statement from the presidency, Disu’s experience, operational knowledge and leadership qualities are expected to provide direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General before forwarding his name to the Senate for confirmation.

Earlier, Onanuga confirmed that Egbetokun stepped down citing family reasons. Egbetokun, who became the 22nd Inspector-General of Police in June 2023, had faced public debate over the extension of his tenure beyond the mandatory retirement age after legislative changes allowed him to remain in office until the end of his term.

Tunji Disu recently served as head of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos after his promotion to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General. Before that, he led the Intelligence Response Team, a special police unit that reports directly to the Inspector-General, and gained national recognition as Commander of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad from 2015 to 2021, where he promoted reforms and community-focused policing. He also served in the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in several states including Rivers and Ondo.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in May 1992. Over the years, he has held various leadership roles, including Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations at the Force Headquarters in Abuja and Deputy Head of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Rivers State. He also served as Commander of the Nigerian Police contingent to the African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur, Sudan.
