Simi Faces Investigation Over Old Tweets About Children

Nigerian singer Simisola, popularly known as Simi, is now under investigation by the Lagos State authorities over old tweets she made between 2012 and 2014. The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) confirmed on Thursday that they have referred the matter to the Commissioner of Police for preliminary investigation.

Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of DSVA, told Channels TV that the investigation is linked to allegations about Simi’s involvement in her mother’s daycare center. She said authorities need victims to come forward with statements and evidence before the case can proceed to prosecution.

“We started looking into this because we noticed some tweets from 2012 and 2014. We have referred the case to the police commissioner for preliminary investigation,” Vivour-Adeniyi explained. “Reports say this happened at a creche her mother ran. Our task force for safeguarding and child protection is conducting preliminary checks. We have a duty to start investigations.”

She added that without victims, it is difficult to prosecute. If the case moves forward, the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions will advise based on the victims’ statements.

One of the tweets being discussed was from 14 March 2012, where she mentioned “a four-year-old child has a crush on her.” Simi said people are misquoting and misinterpreting her words. She explained that she was 23 at the time, helping at her mother’s daycare, and tweeting about everyday life events.

“I don’t use Twitter today, but someone showed me some old tweets. I cannot ignore them. I was 23, definitely not a child. I’m not here to make excuses. What I will not allow is twisting my story to fit false narratives,” Simi said. “I live helping at my mother’s daycare while pursuing music. Small children can be mischievous, and if something funny happens, I tweet about it. Nothing I tweeted came from a dirty mind.”
