Nigerian Lawyer Speaks on Mohbad’s Death Sparks Mixed Reactions Online

A Nigerian lawyer has found himself at the center of social media backlash after publicly revealing his involvement in the ongoing investigation into the controversial death of rising music star Mohbad. The artist, who passed away on September 12, 2023, left behind a grieving wife, Wunmi, a four-month-old son, and a heartbroken fanbase. His sudden death has since been clouded by unanswered questions and public suspicions.

Just recently, a coroner ruled Mohbad’s cause of death as a result of medical negligence, a verdict that immediately sparked debate across social platforms. Amid the controversy, the lawyer stated in a tweet that the widespread attacks on Mohbad’s widow, Wunmi, were unjust and appeared to be intentional. He argued that she was being made a scapegoat in a situation that is all too familiar in some African cultures.

He wrote:

“I was the first Nigerian lawyer that wrote the Chief Coroner of Lagos in respect of Mohbad’s death. I also participated in the Coroner. Barely 4 sittings, I had an idea of how Mohbad died. The attack on Wunmi, his wife, is deliberate and calculated. That lady is being victimized.”

According to him, it is common in African societies for the wife of a deceased man to be blamed or accused by the husband’s family, often without evidence. He pointed out that cultural biases and archaic customs may be influencing public opinion and turning the investigation into a witch hunt.

However, his remarks did not sit well with many Nigerians online. Critics questioned the lawyer’s objectivity and asked whether a thorough investigation had been done before defending Wunmi. Some felt the statement downplayed the importance of examining all key individuals close to Mohbad before his death.

Why are people angry with the lawyer’s statement?
Many Nigerians feel that in a sensitive case like this, everyone close to the deceased should be properly investigated. Some believe that defending any person at this stage—especially without clear proof—could interfere with finding the truth.

One user said, “In a murder case, everybody around the deceased 48 hours to their death is a suspect—regardless of who you are.” Another suggested that the focus should remain on the nurse, as she was the only one officially indicted so far.

Others, however, agreed with the lawyer, saying that Wunmi is being unfairly targeted and that public sentiment is being shaped by deep-rooted cultural prejudices against widows.

As the investigation into Mohbad’s death continues, public debate grows louder. While the lawyer’s attempt to defend Wunmi brings attention to cultural bias and societal pressure, critics argue that justice must be based on facts, not sympathy. Until a full and transparent investigation is completed, many Nigerians remain divided, seeking answers and justice for Mohbad.
