God Won’t Choose Leaders for Us Obi Tells Nigerian Youths Ahead of 2027

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has sent a strong message to Nigerian youths as the 2027 general elections draw closer. Speaking at a National Youth Rally in Awka, Anambra State, Obi told young Nigerians that the power to change the country lies in their hands, not in divine intervention. He explained that while God has blessed Nigeria with resources, it is the responsibility of the people to elect competent and honest leaders who can move the nation forward.

The rally, which was held to mark the 40th Anniversary of the Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria (CYON), brought together thousands of young people from different parts of the country. Obi used the platform to remind the youths that their voter’s card is the strongest weapon against bad leadership. He urged every eligible young Nigerian, especially those just turning 18, to register and vote in 2027, adding that the future of the nation rests on their choices.

In his speech, Obi emphasized that Nigeria’s progress will only occur when citizens choose leaders who possess competence, capacity, compassion, and character. According to him, the country’s problem is not about the position of the President but about the quality of leaders who occupy the office. He noted that the real disaster is not the election itself but when leaders who lack courage, integrity, and genuine concern for the people are voted into power.

He further cautioned young Nigerians against selling their votes, warning that doing so amounts to selling their future. Obi explained that when a person trades their vote for money or gifts, they are also trading away their education, healthcare, and opportunities for a better life. He said Nigeria remains trapped in insecurity, poverty, and poor governance because people have continued to elect leaders who do not represent the nation’s true interests.

Obi also expressed his gratitude to Rev. Fr. Paschal Udo, the priests present, and the leadership of CYON for organizing the event, noting that gatherings like this show the readiness of youths to take active roles in nation-building. He praised Nigerian youths for refusing to remain silent and for showing their determination to take charge of their future through civic engagement.

The former governor of Anambra State reminded the youths that nation-building is their responsibility and cannot be outsourced. He assured them that a new Nigeria is possible if they stand together with honesty, resilience, and determination. Ending his address, Obi declared that God has already blessed Nigeria with everything it needs, but it is now left for citizens, especially the younger generation, to make the right choices in 2027.
