Coroner Blames Mohbad’s Death on Medical Negligence, Calls for Nurse’s Prosecution
The Lagos State coroner has concluded that the controversial death of 26-year-old Nigerian musician Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, was caused by medical negligence. After an inquest that lasted nearly two years, Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi recommended the prosecution of Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the unlicensed nurse who treated Mohbad shortly before his death.
The court ruled that while the late singer suffered bullying and harassment from his former record label boss, Naira Marley, and his associate Sam Larry, there was no direct evidence linking them to the immediate cause of his death. However, the court acknowledged that Mohbad endured significant emotional and physical distress due to their actions.
Magistrate Shotobi also criticized the actions taken by Mohbad’s father following his sudden death, labeling the burial as “hasty” and “undignified.” The court stated that the father should have followed proper legal and medical procedures, such as obtaining a death certificate and conducting an autopsy, instead of rushing the burial.
The court further noted that Mohbad’s wife also had a role to play in the events leading to his death. According to the coroner, she should have insisted on better medical attention when the artist sustained an injury in the days before he passed and should have spoken out against how the body was handled after his death.
What did the coroner conclude about Mohbad’s final days?
The court found that Mohbad experienced emotional turmoil and was let down by his family, the healthcare system, public institutions, and even parts of the music industry. His tragic end was not the result of a single act but a failure on multiple levels.
With 19 witnesses providing testimony, the coroner’s report paints a heartbreaking picture of a young artist surrounded by conflict and neglected care. The Lagos State Government is now expected to take legal action, especially against the nurse whose negligence was found to be a direct cause of Mohbad’s death.
The findings have reignited public calls for justice and accountability in the case, as fans and fellow artists continue to mourn the loss of a rising star whose life ended far too soon.
