Cooking Gas Prices Settle at Around N1,000 per Kg as Supply Increases

There is growing optimism among cooking gas retailers and consumers as the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) begins to stabilise across Nigeria. A recent market check shows that cooking gas is now more available and sells for between N1,000 and N1,400 per kilogram, depending on location and the seller.

The improvement in supply became noticeable towards the end of 2025, especially when compared to the serious shortage recorded in September and October. During that period, many households struggled to access cooking gas, forcing some to return to firewood and charcoal.

Consumers in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, and other states confirmed that they recently bought LPG at prices ranging from N1,050 to N1,400 per kg. Some buyers also said that a few major marketers sold gas directly to consumers at about N900 per kg, which is lower than what most retailers offer.

Many Nigerians see the current price level as a relief compared to the sharp increase experienced late last year. At the peak of the crisis, cooking gas prices rose from about N1,000 per kg to nearly N2,000 per kg in some areas. The increase followed a strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) during a dispute with the Dangote Refinery, which led to the shutdown of gas facilities.

Despite the improvement, consumers are still hopeful that prices will fall below N1,000 per kg in 2026. Many believe that lower prices will encourage more households to adopt clean cooking and reduce health risks linked to smoke from dirty fuels.

Speaking on the situation, the National Chairman of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Retailers branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Ayobami Olarinoye, said the LPG market has become relatively stable. He explained that some gas off-takers are now receiving supplies at Apapa in Lagos.

According to him, retail prices currently range between N1,300 and N1,400 per kg in many neighbourhoods, though prices may be lower at fuel stations and gas plants. He added that location and logistics costs play a major role in pricing.

Olarinoye also revealed that retailers buy LPG from major marketers at prices between N960 and N1,050 per kg. He explained that sellers offering gas below N1,000 per kg are usually plant owners who sell directly to end users, without involving distributors or retailers.
