Kenyan Fan Dies in Crush at Asake Concert, Singer ‘Devastated’
Nigerian Afrobeats star Asake has expressed devastation following the death of 20-year-old fan Karen Lojore, who died in a crush at his concert in Nairobi, Kenya.
In a statement on Monday, Asake said, “I am devastated by the tragic incident that happened at the festival on 20 December. My heart goes out to the family, friends, and loved ones of Karen Lojore.” He also promised to support efforts to understand what happened and called for accountability for those responsible.
Karen Lojore died on the night of Saturday, December 20, at Nyayo National Stadium, which has a capacity of 18,000 and hosts national and social events. Eyewitnesses reported that the crush began when a large number of fans tried to enter the venue, including some without tickets. The push overwhelmed security and caused the tragic incident.
The concert was co-headlined by Gabzy, a British-Nigerian singer based in London. Karen’s family and friends are calling for a full investigation and justice. Her mother posted on social media tagging Asake, Gabzy, and the concert organizers, saying, “What happened to my child? Why her? I want justice for my child.”
Kenya Police spokesperson Michael Muchiri confirmed that investigations have begun. He explained that the stampede occurred near the entry gate and that the situation later calmed, allowing other fans to access the stadium.
Tukutane Entertainment, the concert organizer, expressed deep sadness over the loss. They confirmed they are cooperating fully with authorities and are committed to ensuring fan safety.
Asake, whose real name is Ahmed Ololade, is a breakout Nigerian Afrobeats star blending street-pop, Afrobeats, and Amapiano. He is touring his debut album Mr. Money With the Vibe and has released three albums with YBNL, earning multiple Grammy nominations. Despite his success, the tragic incident has left the singer and his fans mourning the loss of Karen Lojore.
