House of Representatives Committee Conducts Detailed Oversight Visit to Public Service Institute of Nigeria
The House of Representatives Committee on Public Service Matters has carried out an oversight visit to the Public Service Institute of Nigeria (PSIN) in Kubwa, Abuja, to evaluate the operations, performance, and ongoing reforms of the institute. The visit marks the Committee’s first official engagement with the Institute under the leadership of its newly appointed Administrator, a development that Chairman Hon. Sani Umar Bala described as significant for strengthening collaboration and accountability. Bala congratulated the Administrator on the appointment and assured the Institute of the Committee’s support, emphasizing the need for a productive working relationship built on innovation, institutional growth, and transparency.
During the visit, Hon. Bala recalled that the Committee’s last oversight engagement with PSIN took place in July of the previous year, during which several observations and recommendations were made. Chief among these was the call for the Institute to adopt innovative and sustainable strategies to increase its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), to reduce overreliance on government funding and strengthen operational capacity. He noted that the purpose of the current visit was to review compliance with those previous recommendations, assess the progress of ongoing reforms, and identify areas where legislative intervention could further enhance the Institute’s capacity to train and build the competence of public servants across Nigeria.
The Committee also took the opportunity to interact with the Institute’s management and senior officials, gaining insights into the challenges and achievements of the PSIN. Members of the Committee conducted inspections of key facilities to ensure that the Institute’s infrastructure and resources are aligned with its mandate of improving public service delivery. Hon. Bala reiterated the House’s commitment to supporting public service institutions, stressing that effective oversight plays a crucial role in promoting efficiency, accountability, and professionalism within the public sector. He emphasized that the continuous engagement of legislative bodies with institutions like PSIN ensures that public servants are adequately equipped to meet the administrative and governance needs of the country.
The oversight visit highlighted the Committee’s dedication to fostering institutional growth and ensuring that reforms translate into tangible improvements for Nigeria’s public service.
