Shot, Scores Injured As Gunmen Attack Cross River Waterways Travellers
Suspected pirates, on Saturday attacked an outboard engine boat conveying passengers on the Calabar-Oron waterways and shot two passengers and injuring others. It was gathered that one of the travellers, who was shot in the stomach, is lying critically ill in an undisclosed hospital in Calabar, the Cross River State capital. A source said on Monday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, that the pirates came in another speed boat and open fire on their victims and dispossessed them of their belongings including cash. The source decried incessant attacks on travellers along the waterway, which had witnessed heavy traffic in recent times following the deplorable condition of the Calabar-Itu Highway. “We are worried about the incessant attacks on innocent travellers along the waterway. We are calling on the Akwa Ibom State Government and the Commissioner of Police to deploy more marine police to monitor the area.”
