Yoruba Group Urges FG to Remove Sunday Igboho From Wanted List
A group of prominent Yoruba leaders has called on the Federal Government to remove Yoruba nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, from the wanted list. They argued that he has not committed any crime and that his continued restriction is politically motivated.
The appeal was made during a press conference organised by the Yoruba Self-Determination Movement in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. Speaking at the event, the group’s Deputy Leader, Opeoluwa Akinola, said Igboho’s case must be revisited as a matter of justice.
According to Akinola, the activist’s home was invaded by security officials, who allegedly killed people and detained several of his relatives, forcing him into exile. He pointed out that Igboho’s bank accounts were frozen and his assets seized, even though no clear criminal charges were brought against him.
He stated that Igboho has only worked to protect Yoruba communities against killings, kidnappings, and other violent attacks. He therefore urged the government to unfreeze his accounts, release his assets, and remove his name from the wanted list with immediate effect.
Akinola said it was unfair that individuals who allegedly commit crimes against Yoruba communities still move around freely while Igboho remains restricted from returning to his homeland. He described the situation as a serious injustice that must be addressed.
The group also condemned the narrative that Lagos is “No Man’s Land,” stressing that such statements disrespect the heritage of the Yoruba people and have provoked widespread anger.
Akinola added that the recent electoral victory of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in Lagos further confirmed that the Yoruba people remain fully in control of their land and identity.
The group called on the Federal Government to act swiftly and restore Igboho’s freedom so that he can return home without fear of arrest or intimidation.
