Wike Claims Opposition Is Fueling Christian Genocide in Nigeria

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused opposition politicians of fueling the rising religious tension across Nigeria. He described the situation as a targeted attack on Christian communities, calling it a “Christian genocide.” His comments have quickly drawn public attention and strong reactions online.

Wike spoke during an interview with Channels TV, where he reflected on how political groups often use religion as a tool to win power. He recalled the events of 2015, saying that similar tactics were used during the period of former President Goodluck Jonathan. According to him, the same strategy is being used today to deepen division in the country.

He said it is “very obvious” that some political actors are pushing these narratives for their own benefit. However, he did not mention any specific individuals or political parties. This lack of detail has triggered different interpretations among Nigerians, with many debating who Wike may be referring to.

The minister’s comments come at a time when Nigeria continues to face serious security challenges in several regions. In some communities, both Christians and Muslims have suffered from attacks carried out by armed groups, bandits, and extremist organizations. The situation has increased fear and mistrust across religious lines.

Wike warned that the political climate is becoming more dangerous, as sensitive issues like religion can easily be used to divide citizens. He called on leaders to avoid statements or actions that could create further tension. According to him, the peace of the country must come before political ambitions.

He also urged security agencies to take the situation seriously and protect communities that may be vulnerable to attacks. Wike stressed that preventing violence and reducing fear should be treated as a national priority, not a political argument.

Many Nigerians have reacted to his comments on social media, with some supporting his claim and others demanding evidence or clearer identification of those responsible. The discussion continues as the security situation remains a major concern for people across the country.
