Waje Reveals She Was Never Paid For Her Voice On P-Square’s Hit Song Do Me

Nigerian singer Waje has revealed that she was never paid for lending her voice to P-Square’s 2007 hit song Do Me. The singer made this known while speaking on the HonestBunch Podcast hosted by Daddy Freeze, where she discussed her early struggles in the Nigerian music industry. According to her, she sang the entire female chorus that made the song stand out, but she did not receive financial compensation for her contribution.

Waje, whose full name is Aituaje Iruobe, explained that during that period she was still trying to build her career and was grateful for any opportunity to showcase her voice. She said that many people did not know she was the one who sang the chorus because she was not credited on the track, nor was she mentioned anywhere on the album details. This led to years of confusion, as fans often doubted her when she said she was the female voice behind the popular song.

The song Do Me was one of the major tracks on P-Square’s third studio album Game Over, which helped the duo secure their position as one of Africa’s top pop music acts in the 2000s. The track became a nationwide hit and was played at events, clubs, and on radio stations across Nigeria and beyond. Despite the success of the song, Waje said she received no payment or official recognition.

She also shared that she was unable to appear in the music video because she did not have a passport at the time the video was being filmed. This absence further contributed to why many people did not know she was involved in the song. According to Waje, she had to repeatedly explain to people that she was the singer behind the chorus, but her claims were often doubted because there was no official credit to prove it.

Why did people doubt Waje about singing on Do Me?
People doubted her because her name was not credited on the track or included in the album details, and she did not appear in the music video.

Waje mentioned that she holds no anger about what happened, but her story highlights how many young artists in the Nigerian music industry often contribute to major projects without receiving proper credit or compensation. She said experiences like this shaped her understanding of the industry and taught her the importance of proper agreements.

Today, Waje is recognized as one of Nigeria’s most respected vocalists, known for her powerful voice and contributions to many hit songs. Her revelation has once again sparked discussions about fairness, artist rights, and how upcoming singers are treated in the music industry.

Meanwhile, P-Square, made up of twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, later went their separate ways in 2016 due to personal and managerial disagreements. They briefly reunited in 2021, but both have since returned to pursuing solo music projects.
