University of Ibadan Ranked Best University in Nigeria for 2026
The University of Ibadan (UI) has once again emerged as the best university in Nigeria in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, reclaiming the top spot it lost to Covenant University in 2025. This new achievement reaffirms UI’s long-standing reputation as the country’s leading institution of higher learning and a key player in African education.
According to the 2026 rankings, both UI and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) were placed within the 801–1000 global band, making them Nigeria’s top two institutions on the international stage. They were followed by Bayero University Kano (BUK), Covenant University, and Landmark University, which all performed impressively in their respective categories.
The University of Ibadan’s rise back to the top marks a significant comeback. After ranking fourth in 2025, the institution has now reclaimed its leadership position, demonstrating continued progress in teaching, research, and community impact. Founded in 1948, UI remains Nigeria’s oldest university and continues to set the standard for academic excellence in the country.
This year’s Times Higher Education (THE) ranking assessed 2,191 universities from 115 countries, using 18 performance indicators across teaching quality, research impact, industry engagement, and international outlook. Among Nigerian universities, UNILAG was recognized for its strong research output, while BUK excelled in international collaborations. Covenant University, on the other hand, led in industry partnerships and innovation-driven learning.
