Tinubu Urges Armed Forces to Intensify Fight Against Insecurity as Nigeria Inducts New Helicopters

President Bola Tinubu has called on the Nigerian Armed Forces to increase their efforts in addressing the country’s persistent security challenges. Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the induction of Augusta A-109 Trekker helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Tinubu emphasized the need for a well-equipped and agile military to protect both the country and its democracy.

The event, held at the Presidential Air Fleet premises, also marked the 61st anniversary of the Nigerian Air Force. The new helicopters are expected to help tackle terrorism, banditry, oil theft, and other threats facing the nation.

Why did Tinubu call for a stronger military?
Tinubu said Nigeria’s stability depends on a strong military. He urged the armed forces to “step up” and end insecurity, noting that a prepared and properly equipped military is vital for national progress and regional peace.

Vice President Shettima described the induction as more than just the addition of aircraft. He said it is a strategic move to show Nigeria’s commitment to defending itself and strengthening its leadership in Africa. Despite limited resources, he noted that President Tinubu’s administration remains focused on boosting the capacity of all armed forces.

Shettima also called for regional cooperation, especially with countries in the Lake Chad region, to stop cross-border crimes. He said multinational collaborations must be expanded and replicated to deal with widespread security concerns across Africa.

He added that global conflicts in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa are changing the security landscape, and Nigeria must remain alert. The armed forces, he said, should also be ready to support international peacekeeping missions.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, praised the government for its continued support and confirmed that since 2024, the Air Force has received:

  • 4 x C-129 attack helicopters
  • 3 x King Air 360 aircraft
  • 2 x Augusta A-109 Trekker helicopters

Looking ahead, Nigeria is expected to receive 49 additional aircraft in the next two years, including:

  • 10 Augusta A-109 Trekkers
  • 12 AH-1 Zulu Attack Helicopters
  • 24 M-346 Ground Attack Aircraft
  • 3 Kata 295 Medium Airlift Aircraft

These new additions will improve Nigeria’s combat strength, mobility, and surveillance capacity. Abubakar also highlighted the training of eight pilots and 18 engineers for the new helicopters and mentioned that crews are undergoing specialized training abroad to further build local expertise.

To support long-term development, the NAF is investing in research and innovation, including local production of C-57mm rockets, retrofitting old weapons, and developing in-house testing tools. These efforts aim to build self-reliance in defense technology.

Abubakar expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for his backing and acknowledged Leonardo of Italy for delivering the helicopters on time. He assured that the new aircraft would be properly used and maintained to serve Nigeria’s interests.

He concluded by honoring past military leaders whose contributions continue to guide the force, reaffirming the Air Force’s dedication to securing Nigeria.
