Tinubu Predicts More Defections to APC Ahead of 2027 Elections
President Bola Tinubu has expressed confidence that more politicians will join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the 2027 general elections approach. Speaking at the APC Renewed Hope Agenda Summit at the State House Conference Centre, Tinubu said defection is normal in politics, especially when other parties are struggling.
According to a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu told top APC leaders, members of the National Working Committee, the National Assembly leadership, and 22 APC governors that the party is on the right track. He emphasized that his government’s economic reforms are working and attracting positive attention both locally and internationally.
Tinubu said, “You don’t expect people to stay on a sinking ship without a life jacket. I am happy with what we have achieved and expect more to join us. That’s politics.”
He reminded the audience that democracy gives citizens the freedom to associate with any political group. Reflecting on his administration’s efforts since May 2023, Tinubu said the government has been focused on tackling Nigeria’s economic instability, strengthening national security, curbing corruption, and reducing poverty.
The President acknowledged the reforms have not been easy, but he insisted they are necessary for Nigeria’s long-term prosperity. “Only hard decisions can make the future easier,” he said, noting that without correcting the exchange rate arbitrage, corruption would remain unchecked. He cited a recent case where the EFCC reportedly recovered over 750 properties from a single individual.
Tinubu also pointed to recent tax reforms and foreign investments as signs that Nigeria’s economic recovery is on track. “These investments will lead to jobs, services, and an improved standard of living for Nigerians,” he added.
In response, party leaders and stakeholders at the summit endorsed President Tinubu for a second term in office. Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, praised Tinubu’s leadership and moved a motion for his endorsement, seconded by Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, also supported the endorsement, praising Tinubu’s vision and inclusive governance. APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, said Tinubu would be the party’s sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
Ganduje called on all APC members to avoid internal conflicts, stay connected with communities, and reinforce the party’s foundation ahead of the next polls. “Let us rally behind Tinubu and keep the Renewed Hope Agenda alive,” he said.
The summit reviewed the administration’s progress over the past two years in key sectors like health, infrastructure, and security, affirming APC’s commitment to delivering on its promises.
