Tinubu Celebrates D’Tigress for Fifth Straight AfroBasket Victory
President Bola Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with a presidential reception at the State House in Abuja following their historic fifth consecutive win at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship. The team was hosted on Monday at the new banquet hall of the Presidential Villa to celebrate their achievement.
The reception began at exactly 5:05 pm and was graced by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, who warmly welcomed the champions. Vice President Kashim Shettima represented President Tinubu at the event, praising the team for their consistent excellence and describing them as “worthy ambassadors of Nigeria.”
D’Tigress sealed their legacy as African basketball giants by defeating Mali 78–64 in the finals at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The win earned them a fifth straight AfroBasket title and reaffirmed their dominance in women’s basketball on the continent.
Top government officials also attended the celebration, including Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President; Garba Maidoki, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports Development; and Kabiru Amadou, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports.
As a mark of appreciation, President Tinubu awarded each player $100,000, a new flat, and a national honour. The gesture mirrors the recent presidential reception held for the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s football team, who also made the country proud by winning their tenth WAFCON title in Morocco.
This grand reception serves as a boost to women’s sports in Nigeria and highlights the government’s commitment to rewarding excellence and encouraging young athletes across the nation.
