Timini Egbuson Says Big Brother Africa Rejection Led to His Breakthrough

Popular Nigerian actor Timini Egbuson has revealed how missing out on Big Brother Africa turned out to be one of the biggest blessings in his life and career. Speaking on The Culture League podcast, Egbuson opened up about being rejected after reaching the final selection stage to represent Nigeria on the reality TV show — a moment that unexpectedly pushed him toward a successful acting journey.

Timini recalled how he had been one of the five finalists selected for the show. He had even prepared extensively, including hiring someone to manage his social media, in anticipation of entering the Big Brother house. However, at the last minute, he wasn’t selected.

“I was supposed to be on Big Brother Africa some years ago,” he said. “It was about five of us. We had done all the necessary things, packed our bags, and were waiting to be called. But they didn’t pick me. I think Tayo went that year, but I’m not sure.”

What could have been a moment of deep disappointment became a career-defining turn. That same year, Timini landed a major acting role in the MTV Shuga Naija series — a role that introduced him to the limelight and established him as one of Nollywood’s rising stars.

“MTV Shuga is what launched my career to who I am today,” Timini shared. “If I had gone on Big Brother, the hype would have gone down by now, or I might not have made it in the entertainment industry. So, sometimes, when you lose opportunities, you just have to count it as a blessing.”

Reflecting on the experience, the Shuga star stressed how important it is to stay resilient in the face of rejection. “I have learnt that sometimes, lost opportunities could be a blessing,” he said. “Some roles I wanted went to others, and some people wanted roles that I got. But when I look at my career now, I know those detours were meant to guide me to where I’m supposed to be.”

Timini emphasized that not every opportunity is meant to be taken and that rejection can often protect one from paths that aren’t aligned with their purpose. “I believe that where I am today is where I’m ordained by God to be,” he said. “When doors close, don’t give up. Dust your feet and keep going. That’s one hard lesson I’ve learned.”

Today, Timini Egbuson is one of Nollywood’s most recognized and celebrated young actors, proving that sometimes the best opportunities come after rejection. His story serves as inspiration for anyone who has faced setbacks on the road to success — reminding us that every “no” can be a redirection to something greater.
