Tacha Says Most People in the UK Are Broke, Sparks Reactions Online

Popular reality TV star Tacha Akide, known for her time on Big Brother Naija, has stirred controversy online with her bold claim that many Nigerians living in the UK are broke. In a video shared on her social media, Tacha — who recently relocated to the UK — expressed surprise at the number of people who are struggling financially abroad.

She criticised Nigerians in Nigeria who assume that everyone in the UK is rich, describing it as a mindset rooted in “inferiority complex.” According to Tacha, life in the UK is extremely expensive and not as glamorous as people back home often think.

“You see those of you always having an inferiority complex in Nigeria, thinking everyone here is rich… the most broke people I have met are actually the people I met in the UK,” she said. “Everyone is holding themselves. It is expensive as f$ck. Most people in Nigeria are living better off than most people in here.”

Her comments quickly went viral and triggered strong reactions from social media users. Some called her out for generalising, while others asked pointed questions about her own lifestyle abroad.

One user, anniejones8224, criticized her, writing, “Do you work? Tacha what do you do for a living? What is your status in the UK? Can’t you buy a car? Sort out your immigration status and get yourself a good job first.”

Another user, may17_collections, added, “My sister, find shift pick o. Here no be Lagos. Nobody dey bankroll anybody here.”

adewhalezz also weighed in, saying, “It is pounds not dollars ma. Why not go to Naija and never return to the UK? Nobody send Una ‘celebrity without substance status’ for abroad.”

While some agreed with her views about the rising cost of living in the UK, many others felt she exaggerated the reality or spoke from a personal place of frustration. The debate highlights the ongoing conversation about what life is really like for Nigerians abroad, especially as many back home still see relocating as the ultimate goal.
