Sola Sobowale Shares Why She Left Nollywood for 15 Years and Took Menial Jobs in the UK

Veteran Nollywood actress Sola Sobowale has shared the emotional and personal reason behind her 15-year break from the film industry and her surprising decision to take on menial jobs in the United Kingdom. In a heartfelt interview on #WithChude, she revealed how her choice was driven by a deep commitment to raising her children and giving them the best life possible.

Sola, who is now 56, left Nigeria and her thriving acting career in the early 2000s at the peak of her fame. According to her, the decision came after she noticed a drastic change in her children during a visit to the UK. She realized they were losing the motherly care and attention they needed, which made her take a stand.

“They weren’t the kids that I took. That motherly touch was not there. So I said ‘to your tent o Israel’. I’m here with my children,” she said. Her mission became clear: to guide, nurture, and be present for her children, even if it meant walking away from fame and financial comfort.

Sola described how she went from earning millions in Nollywood to taking up cleaning and kitchen jobs in England. She recalled earning ₦800,000 from one film in 2000 and returning to Lagos with about ₦5 million, only to later take jobs in the UK that paid her £7.50 per hour. Despite the drastic change in lifestyle, she said she felt proud because she believed in the dignity of labour.

“I’m proud. There is nothing this woman cannot do because I know what is called dignity in labour,” she said. “I will sweep from here to Kenya or Ghana as long as it puts food on my table and clothes on my children.”

Her story also reflects her resilience. She wore her work uniform on buses and trains in the UK, sometimes hearing Nigerians whispering or wondering why a celebrity would be doing such work. But her response was simple: she was doing what she needed to do, just like anyone else.
