Simi Condemns Sexual Assault, Urges Men to Hold Friends Accountable
Nigerian singer Simi has spoken out strongly against sexual assault, urging men to take responsibility for confronting the problem among their peers. The Afrobeats star shared her message on X, drawing attention to the widespread abuse many women face.
In her post, Simi criticised the culture of silence where men ignore or excuse friends’ harmful actions. She called on men to hold one another accountable and to support survivors instead of dismissing allegations or protecting friends over justice.
Simi highlighted the real dangers women face, saying, “I take a pepper spray when I walk outside alone or with my daughter. Do you think I’m scared of other women? If you’re not a rapist and people calling out rapists bother you, you need to sit and have a conversation with yourself.”
She emphasised that almost every woman she knows has experienced sexual assault and rejected the idea that speaking up is often a lie. “Women are terrified to go out. Women in their homes are not safe either. Ask your sisters, friends, or wives. We’re not all crazy. Stop raping women!” Simi wrote, urging society to confront the reality of abuse rather than dismiss it.
Her message has sparked conversation online, encouraging men to reflect on their actions and the actions of those around them. By speaking out, Simi reinforces the importance of accountability and the urgent need to protect women in all spaces.
The singer’s post serves as a strong reminder that tackling sexual assault requires honesty, courage, and the active participation of everyone, especially men, to challenge harmful behaviour and support victims.
