Seyi Law Reflects on Sacrifices as He Marks 20 Years in Comedy

Ace Nigerian comedian Seyi Law has opened up about the sacrifices that shaped his journey in the comedy industry as he prepares to celebrate two decades on stage. In a recent interview with HipTV, the comedian reflected on the challenges, tough decisions, and turning points that helped him build his career.

Seyi Law revealed that leaving his comfort zone played a major role in his growth. He recalled moving from his uncle’s home in Orile to live with his aunt in Ebute Meta, Lagos, just to be closer to opportunities for stage performances. While the move was not convenient, he said it brought him closer to the right environment to pursue comedy seriously.

The comedian also remembered the early days of traveling to universities across Nigeria with his friend, comedian Emeka Smith, to look for platforms to showcase their talents. He described how they went to schools such as Obafemi Awolowo University, the University of Ibadan, Olabisi Onabanjo University, UNILAG, and LASU. Without money for hotels, they often slept in study theatres, bathed wherever possible, and waited for opportunities to perform at events.

Sharing one of his memorable experiences, Seyi Law said he once backed up singer 9ice during a performance at a LASU law dinner, a moment that showed how persistence and resilience helped him gain exposure. According to him, such struggles were stepping stones to the success he enjoys today.

Speaking on mentorship, Seyi Law credited veteran comedian Ali Baba for inspiring him to create space for younger talents. He explained that after getting his first apartment, he allowed several comedians to live with him and find their footing. Many of them have now grown into successful entertainers in their own right.

He also revealed that his shows outside Nigeria helped several musicians get their first international visas. Among those he mentioned were Kizz Daniel, Adekunle Gold, and Woli Arole, who have all gone on to build successful careers in music and entertainment.

Reflecting on the journey, Seyi Law said: “It’s been 20 years and there has been a lot of sacrifices to get to where I am today. But when success comes, you most times forget the sacrifices. Like they say, a day of joy erases years of sorrow.”

His story highlights how dedication, resilience, and sacrifice often pave the way for long-lasting success. From humble beginnings to becoming one of Nigeria’s most celebrated comedians, Seyi Law’s journey is proof that hard work and persistence eventually pay off.
