Senate goes on annual break, resumes September 23
The Nigerian Senate has officially adjourned its plenary activities to begin its annual recess and will reconvene on September 23, 2025. Senate President Godswill Akpabio made this announcement on Wednesday, explaining that the break was in line with the legislative calendar and mirrored the recent recess of the House of Representatives.
Akpabio emphasized that the pause only applies to plenary sessions and not to legislative responsibilities. He told the senators that their core oversight functions must continue throughout the break period. “We are not shutting down our work. Committees must still carry out their functions, including visits to prisons, diaspora issues, and other areas,” he said.
He noted that this period is particularly useful for conducting site inspections and reporting progress on national projects. He urged members to travel to various parts of the country, including Sokoto, to oversee road repairs and similar works.
“By the time we return, your committees are expected to submit detailed reports,” Akpabio stated, wishing his colleagues safe travels and good health throughout the recess period.
In addition, the Senate President informed the chamber of the passing of Professor Janet Plang, the wife of Senator Diket Plang. He asked members to regroup in Abuja by Friday morning to fly together to Plateau State for the funeral. A plane will be made available by 8 a.m. to facilitate their journey.
Earlier in the day, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele expressed gratitude to fellow lawmakers for their dedication to lawmaking duties. He praised their collective efforts in ensuring the National Assembly’s business ran smoothly.
Bamidele then made a motion to postpone all remaining items on the day’s agenda until the Senate reconvenes. The motion was accepted without objection, formally marking the beginning of the Senate’s annual break.
