Sarz Explains Why Nigerian Artists Earn Less from Streaming Platforms

Nigerian music producer Osabuohien Osaretin, popularly known as Sarz, has explained why Nigerian artists earn much less from streaming platforms compared to Western countries.

Speaking on the Afropolitan podcast, Sarz said that the same number of streams generates far more money in countries like the United States. He pointed out that while a million streams in the U.S. might earn an artist between $3,000 and $5,000, a million streams in Nigeria could bring just $300 to $500. Despite the lower earnings, promoting and marketing music in Nigeria costs as much as it would abroad.

Sarz noted that the Nigerian economy is a key factor in this income gap. Most Nigerians cannot afford premium streaming subscriptions, which limits revenue for artists. “People are streaming music, but those who can’t afford it just don’t have the money to pay. We are waiting for the economy to improve so other things can start improving as well,” he said.

He also emphasized that Nigerian artists have done very well with the resources available, overcoming obstacles to achieve success locally and internationally. Sarz highlighted that improving the economy and empowering people would help bridge the streaming revenue gap.

The music producer’s comments shed light on the challenges Nigerian artists face in monetizing their work, despite the global popularity of Afrobeats. His insights also stress the importance of economic growth and government support in boosting the creative industry.

As the industry grows, bridging the gap in streaming revenues remains a critical conversation for Nigerian artists, producers, and stakeholders looking to make Afrobeats profitable globally.
