Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ Earns Over N400 Million in 3 Weeks at Nigerian Box Office
Ryan Coogler’s psychological thriller Sinners has made an impressive mark at the Nigerian box office, crossing N400 million in just three weeks. As of now, the film has earned a total of N445.9 million, continuing to dominate local cinema charts.
The film has been at the top of the box office for three consecutive weekends. From May 2nd to 4th, Sinners added another N89.5 million to its earnings, securing its position as the highest-grossing film in Nigeria for the third week in a row. This brings its total earnings up by 43% compared to the previous week’s total of N269.9 million.
Since its release on April 18, Sinners has outperformed expectations, making a strong debut with N79.6 million in its opening weekend. The film’s success in Nigeria is especially notable in a market traditionally dominated by Nollywood films.
Globally, Sinners has also performed exceptionally well. In its third weekend, the film grossed an additional $43 million, bringing its total U.S. earnings to $236 million. With this momentum, Sinners is on track to join the ranks of top horror blockbusters like Get Out, The Conjuring, and A Quiet Place.
Analysts believe the film’s success is due to its powerful social commentary, suspenseful atmosphere, and stellar performances, especially from lead actor Michael B. Jordan. Sinners has sparked conversations on race, religion, and redemption, resonating with audiences worldwide.
The film had a production budget of $80 million, but due to production delays and cost overruns, the final budget reached $100 million. Coogler, showing his commitment to the film, personally covered the additional costs by reducing his director’s fee and backend compensation.
Sinners tells the story of a former preacher, played by Michael B. Jordan, who returns to his hometown after a decade of exile. As he tries to rebuild his community and come to terms with his past, he becomes entangled in a series of mysterious events that blur the line between redemption and damnation.
Known for his previous successes like Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther, Coogler has once again proven his versatility as a director. With Sinners, he brings a fresh voice to the horror genre, capturing the attention of global audiences.
