Ruggedman Arrested Over PMAN Dispute Sparks Public Outrage

Nigerian rapper Ruggedman has reportedly been arrested by the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti following a leadership dispute involving the Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN). The arrest has sparked widespread criticism from the public and human rights advocates.

According to activist Harrison Gwamnishu, Ruggedman is being detained without a fair investigation. He expressed concern that the rapper, along with others held in connection to the case, is facing poor treatment in custody. This has raised fears about due process and the abuse of power by authorities.

Ruggedman’s legal troubles reportedly stem from a leadership struggle within PMAN. The association had previously suspended Ruggedman, along with artists JFO Baba Ojonorgua, Sunny Neji, and Zaaki Azzay, in August 2024, citing alleged misconduct. The internal conflict appears to have escalated, leading to this controversial arrest.

Public reaction has been swift and heated, especially on social media. Many Nigerians have condemned the arrest, viewing it as targeted harassment against an artist known for championing musicians’ rights. Ruggedman has long been a vocal advocate for the fair treatment and recognition of Nigerian artists, making his arrest particularly troubling for those in the industry.

“There has been no proper investigation,” said Gwamnishu. “He and others are being maltreated. I wish to draw the attention of Nigerians to what is going on.”

Calls are now mounting for Ruggedman’s immediate release and for authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into the matter. Supporters are urging PMAN to resolve its internal disputes through peaceful and democratic means instead of resorting to arrests and alleged intimidation.

The incident has once again highlighted the fragile state of artist governance in Nigeria and the urgent need for reforms in how disputes within creative unions are handled.

As this story develops, many are watching closely to see whether justice will be served and if Ruggedman and the other artists involved will be treated fairly.
