Rotary Club brings healthcare relief to underserved families in Lekki
The Rotary Club of Lekki Golden has delivered vital healthcare services to underserved communities in the Ikota area of Lekki, Lagos, through its impactful initiative, Project Safe Start. This programme is part of the club’s broader maternal and child health campaign, aimed at ensuring better healthcare access for vulnerable families.
Partnering with Orchid Road General Hospital and BioSci Health Care, the project focused on early diagnosis and preventive care. These efforts were targeted at improving the overall well-being of women and children who typically lack access to consistent medical support in the region.
Christiana Okenla, President of the Rotary Club of Lekki Golden, expressed deep gratitude to all partners, sponsors, and medical volunteers who contributed to the success of the outreach. She described their involvement as a clear demonstration of how impactful collaboration and compassion can be when delivering critical health interventions.
One of the standout elements of the programme was the distribution of 100 mosquito nets, specially designed for both adults and infants. This effort was directed at reducing the risk of malaria in homes without regular access to mosquito prevention tools. In addition, 50 sickle cell screening kits were distributed to ensure early detection in newborns, potentially reducing long-term health complications.
Over 70 women received free on-site medical check-ups carried out by a team of dedicated doctors and nurses from Orchid Road General Hospital. These check-ups primarily focused on maternal health and highlighted the importance of preventive medicine. The event also featured the “Dress a Dream” campaign, which provided clothing support to children in need.
Okenla emphasized that Project Safe Start aligns perfectly with Rotary International’s global priority on maternal and child health. She noted that the initiative not only brought immediate support but also inspired ongoing service and transformation in grassroots communities.
The Rotary Club of Lekki Golden reaffirmed its commitment to long-term solutions that address healthcare inequities, support education, and empower vulnerable populations. The success of Project Safe Start serves as a powerful example of how local organisations can create lasting change through meaningful partnerships and community engagement.
