Remi Tinubu Empowers 250 Elderly Citizens in Zamfara Through Renewed Hope Initiative
The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has extended her support to 250 elderly citizens in Zamfara State as part of the third edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS). The event, which distributed financial assistance to vulnerable senior citizens, was held at the Government House Chamber Hall in Gusau, the state capital.
Represented at the event by the First Lady of Zamfara State, Hajiya Huriyya Lawal, Oluremi Tinubu emphasized the importance of caring for elderly citizens. She said, “I am delighted to join you today at the third edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme with the theme ‘Finding Joy in Old Age.’ This social investment programme embodies our ongoing effort to ensure that our elderly citizens live with dignity and joy, in a nation that genuinely cares for its own.”
Since the inception of this administration in 2023, the Renewed Hope Initiative has made it a tradition to honor senior citizens every December, recognizing their invaluable contributions to nation-building. Through this program, the initiative continues to demonstrate gratitude and care for the men and women who have worked tirelessly to build Nigeria.
The current scheme aims to support 250 vulnerable elderly citizens aged 65 and above in each of Nigeria’s 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and beneficiaries from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA). Across the country, a total of 9,500 selected beneficiaries are set to receive ₦200,000 each, amounting to a total disbursement of ₦1.9 billion approved by the Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative. Each state, including the FCT and DEPOWA, will receive ₦50 million for distribution.
Oluremi Tinubu highlighted the moral responsibility of society to care for senior citizens. “They have walked difficult paths so that the younger generations may have smoother roads to travel. It is our duty and joy to ensure that they live their twilight years in comfort, good health, and dignity,” she said.
The First Lady also advised elderly citizens to actively seek joy in old age, while emphasizing the importance of community, compassion, and engagement. She encouraged seniors to maintain both physical and mental health through regular exercise and meaningful activities. Likewise, she urged younger citizens to participate in charitable activities, finding joy in supporting others.
“I say thank you for your service, your sacrifices, and your prayers for our great nation. May God continue to grant you good health, peace, and renewed hope. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all your excellencies, the State Coordinators of RHI, and partners for supporting this scheme,” she added.
As the festive season approaches, Oluremi Tinubu wishes all beneficiaries a joyful holiday season and prays that 2026 will bring renewed hope and greater accomplishments for the nation and its citizens.
