President Tinubu Celebrates Wole Soyinka on 91st Birthday
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured Professor Wole Soyinka on his 91st birthday, calling him a great inspiration to Nigeria and the world. The tribute was shared in a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
Tinubu praised Soyinka for his lifelong work in literature, human rights, and national development. He described the Nobel Laureate as a strong and respected figure whose influence continues across generations.
In the message, Tinubu said: “Professor Wole Soyinka, a world-famous literary figure and cultural icon, turns 91 today. His plays, poems, essays, and memoirs show his great creativity and intelligence.”
He also highlighted Soyinka’s work in education, pro-democracy efforts, and cultural promotion in Nigeria. Tinubu reminded Nigerians that Soyinka was the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, which he received in 1986.
The president said Soyinka is a role model to many younger writers in Nigeria and around the world. He noted that these young talents have gained both national and international recognition because of Soyinka’s influence.
Speaking about his personal relationship with the Nobel Laureate, Tinubu praised Soyinka’s love for Nigeria and his desire to see the country grow. “Even at this old age, he is still a great source of hope and encouragement,” Tinubu said.
Tinubu added: “I am thankful for the many years Soyinka has spent helping Nigeria. I value our friendship and the projects we have worked on together to move the country forward.”
Wole Soyinka, who made history in 1986 as the first African to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, is still one of Africa’s strongest voices in discussions on justice, freedom, and identity. His legacy continues to inspire both leaders and citizens.
