Pastor Sam Adeyemi Blasts Nigerian Leaders for Abandoning the Poor

Renowned preacher and founder of Daystar Christian Centre, Pastor Sam Adeyemi, has criticised Nigerian leaders for turning a blind eye to the suffering of the poor, saying many have lost empathy and are out of touch with everyday struggles.

During a recent appearance on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme aired on Thursday, May 22, 2025, Adeyemi expressed concern over the priorities of political leaders, accusing them of caring more about retaining power than genuinely serving the people.

“The fear of losing power drives many leaders to defect between political parties,” Adeyemi stated. “Some have clearly lost touch with the plight of the poor; they lack empathy and compassion.”

He urged leaders to create a governance environment where sound decisions could be made to benefit the entire nation, rather than a select few. He also highlighted the damaging influence of political godfathers, who he said decide who gains power rather than allowing the will of the people to prevail.

Why did Pastor Sam Adeyemi call out Nigerian leaders?
He believes many leaders are focused on personal gain and political survival, while neglecting the welfare of the masses. He also condemned the control of power by political godfathers, which he said encourages corruption and weakens democracy.

According to Adeyemi, this flawed system only produces selfish leaders who eventually forget the very people they are meant to serve. He added that leaders should embrace national unity over ethnic and regional biases, referencing former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an example of someone who opposed ethnic politics for the good of the country.

He shared an experience where a foreigner raised concerns about internal blame within the Presidential Villa, where some were reportedly blaming Northerners for national problems. Adeyemi warned that such divisive narratives are dangerous and could tear the country apart.

He concluded with a strong call for leaders to reconnect with the people, focus on development, and place the interest of the nation above personal ambition or ethnic sentiments.
