Oyo Governor Approves Coronation of Oba Rasheed Ladoja as 44th Olubadan

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has officially approved the nomination and coronation of Oba Rasheed Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. The coronation has been scheduled to take place on Friday, September 26, 2025, in Ibadan, the state capital.

This announcement follows the formal nomination of Ladoja by the Olubadan-in-Council, which cleared the way for his installation as the paramount ruler of Ibadanland. The decision comes after the passing of the immediate past Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who died on July 7, 2025, barely one year after ascending the throne.

Confirming the development, the media aide to the Olubadan-designate, Chief Adeola Oloko, said: “Oba Ladoja will be enthroned as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland on Friday, 26 September 2025.”

Oba Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State, had earlier hinted at his readiness to take up the traditional stool. While addressing family members, associates, and residents on Monday, he noted that upon his return to the state, he would meet with all relevant stakeholders to agree on a coronation date.

The Olubadan-designate also revealed that consultations would be made with key traditional figures, including the Oluwo and the Araba of Ibadan, to ensure that all cultural and spiritual rites for his installation are properly observed. He described his selection as a “coincidental blessing” and expressed gratitude for the honor of serving Ibadanland in this capacity.

Notably, the coronation will come a day after Oba Ladoja’s 81st birthday, as he was born in 1944. His enthronement is expected to draw dignitaries, traditional rulers, and political leaders from across Nigeria.

To oversee the coronation plans, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) appointed its former President-General, Chief Bayo Oyero, as chairman of the Coronation Committee. The committee will coordinate arrangements to ensure a colorful and historic ceremony befitting Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage.

The confirmation of Oba Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan marks the beginning of a new chapter for Ibadanland, one of the most culturally significant cities in Nigeria.
