Over 2 Million Candidates Begin 2025 UTME Nationwide

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially commenced the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) across all states in Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. With this nationwide exercise, over two million candidates are now participating in the annual entry examination into Nigeria’s higher institutions.

According to figures released by JAMB officials, a total of 2,030,627 candidates registered for this year’s UTME. This includes 41,026 candidates under the age of 16, showing the increasing number of younger students striving to gain early admission into tertiary institutions.

Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s spokesperson, explained that the board made necessary adjustments to accommodate key logistics and support services from its partner agencies. These adjustments, he noted, were made to ensure the smooth running of the exam process nationwide.

One of the CBT centres visited by a correspondent — La Vogue International School, Kurudu, Abuja — confirmed the successful start of the exam, with candidates seated in an orderly manner and the system running without hitches.

Before the official exam began, JAMB had earlier conducted a mock examination to help candidates become familiar with the Computer-Based Test (CBT) format. The mock exam also helped JAMB fine-tune its logistics and ensure the readiness of its systems and staff.

What is the significance of this year’s UTME?
The 2025 UTME marks one of the largest candidate turnouts in recent years, reflecting the growing demand for tertiary education in Nigeria. It also showcases the increasing acceptance of CBT-based exams by younger candidates.

Tips and Recommendations:

  • Candidates should arrive at exam centres early and follow all instructions to avoid disqualification.
  • Parents and guardians should support their wards emotionally during the exam period.
  • JAMB should continue refining its systems to prevent technical issues and ensure fair testing.

With the large number of participants and smooth coordination reported so far, the 2025 UTME is expected to be one of the most efficiently run in recent history.
