Osimhen Shines for Galatasaray as Nigerian Players Struggle in Europe

As the first international window of the year nears, Nigerian footballers faced a tough weekend across Europe, with many failing to deliver standout performances. However, Victor Osimhen was the exception, leading Galatasaray to victory in Turkey.

Osimhen continued his impressive form, scoring the winning goal in Galatasaray’s 2-1 victory over Alanyaspor. His powerful header in the 62nd minute secured all three points and extended his league tally to 17 goals and four assists. His contribution kept Gala’s seven-point lead intact as Fenerbahce chased them down.

In England, Wilfred Ndidi played a full 90 minutes for Leicester City in their 1-0 loss to Chelsea, marking their 19th defeat of the season. Despite his efforts, Leicester remained deep in relegation trouble.

In Spain, Chrisantus Uche featured for Getafe as they stunned Atletico Madrid 2-1. The Nigerian midfielder, listed in the Super Eagles’ provisional squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, played the entire match, maintaining his consistent presence in La Liga. Meanwhile, Edna Imade came off the bench for Granada in their 2-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao Women, while Chinyere Kalu played 70 minutes in Real Betis Women’s goalless draw against Atletico Madrid Women.

Bruno Onyemaechi helped Olympiakos secure a 1-0 win in Greece, pushing them closer to the league title, while Raphael Onyedika played a key role in Club Brugge’s 3-1 win over Cercle Brugge in Belgium before being substituted at halftime.
