Nigeria’s Longest Reigning King Oba Sikiru Adetona Dies at 91

Oba Sikiru Adetona, the respected Awujale of Ijebuland in Ogun State, has passed away at the age of 91. He died on July 13, 2025, after serving as a traditional ruler for over 64 years, making him Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarch.

The Ogun State government confirmed his death and paid tribute to his great contributions to Ijebuland and Nigeria. Oba Adetona became king in 1960 and led his people with wisdom and vision throughout his reign.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State described the late monarch as a symbol of peace, tradition, and progress. He praised Oba Adetona for helping the Ijebu people grow in education, healthcare, and business.

The governor also said the king played a big role in making the Ojude Oba festival a global event. This yearly celebration in Ijebu-Ode has brought international attention to Ijebuland and its culture.

“Even as we are sad about his death, we must celebrate the great life he lived,” said Governor Abiodun. “He gave his life to serving the people and improving their lives. His wisdom and kindness will never be forgotten.”

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona was born on May 10, 1934, in Imupa, Ijebu-Ode. He came from the Royal House of Anikinaiya and was installed as king on April 2, 1960. He became one of the most respected monarchs in Nigeria.

Throughout his long reign, he worked to preserve culture while also promoting modern development. Many regard him as a leader who successfully balanced tradition with progress, thereby making Ijebuland a strong and united community.

Oba Adetona’s death is a big loss for Nigeria. His name will always be remembered for the legacy he left behind. As tributes continue to pour in, many pray his soul rests in peace and that his good works will live on.
