Nigeria Mourns Former Chief Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad Who Dies in Saudi Arabia

Nigeria is in mourning following the death of Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (retd.), the former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). He passed away at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, confirmed by close sources early on December 16, 2025.

The Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS) officially announced his death, calling it a “monumental loss” for the country. In their statement, the association praised his lifelong dedication to justice, integrity, and mentorship. They described him as “a towering figure of integrity, humility, and unwavering commitment to justice” and highlighted his role in shaping Nigeria’s judiciary.

During his tenure, Justice Tanko Muhammad was respected for his fairness, courage, and fidelity to the rule of law. He was also a mentor to Muslim law students across Nigeria, inspiring a new generation of legal professionals. NAMLAS noted, “To NAMLAS, the late Chief Justice was more than a jurist; he was a fatherly pillar and a source of encouragement to Muslim law students across the country.”

The association concluded their statement with prayers for his soul: “Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. May Allah grant him the highest abode in Jannatul Firdaus.”
