Nicki Minaj Urges Fans to Be More Supportive and Patient with Nigerian Artistes

US rapper Nicki Minaj has urged fans to show more understanding and patience toward Nigerian artists, many of whom have faced intense criticism this week.

Recent controversies have seen several Nigerian musicians under fire from fans. Burna Boy faced backlash after jokingly stating that he wanted “only rich fans,” which some interpreted as arrogance. Yemi Alade was criticized for opposing suggestions of American intervention in Nigeria’s escalating insecurity. Other celebrities were also chastised for appearing “insensitive” on social media after posting content unrelated to tragic events, such as the deadly terrorist attack on a church in Kwara State and the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi.

Responding to the wave of criticism, Nicki Minaj called on fans to exercise wisdom and compassion when evaluating the actions and statements of Nigerian artistes. She emphasised that critics would gain a better perspective if they approached artists with understanding rather than judgment.

On her X handle, she wrote:
“My darlings, let’s utilize wisdom & compassion as it relates to our Nigerian artists. There are very logical reasons for most things when we look not to judge, but to comprehend. That goes for every country & their artists. Let’s lift them up & continue to use wisdom.”

Nicki Minaj’s call for empathy follows her recent recognition in Nigeria after addressing jihadist violence against Christians at a United Nations event in New York. During her speech, she called for urgent action against terrorists and emphasized the importance of freedom of worship, earning commendations from Nigerians for her advocacy.
