NCF Plants 184,000 Trees to Help Save Nigeria’s Forests

The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) has announced that it planted 184,000 trees in 2024 as part of its plan to bring back Nigeria’s forest cover. The goal is to restore 25% of Nigeria’s forests by the year 2047.

This important news was shared during NCF’s 36th Annual General Meeting, held at the Lekki Conservation Centre. During the meeting, leaders, members, and environmental experts came together to talk about saving Nigeria’s natural heritage.

The President of NCF’s Board of Trustees, Izoma Asiodu, said the foundation had a strong start to the year, with many successful projects. He mentioned the 22nd Chief S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture and the awarding of research grants to two PhD students for environmental studies.

Asiodu added that the Green Recovery Nigeria programme is helping to bring back lost forests. He said planting trees is just one part of the plan—the NCF is also supporting local communities by giving them access to clean water and helping them improve their livelihoods.

A special example he mentioned was in Yobe State, where the NCF installed a borehole in the Maja-Kura community, one of the places most affected by climate change. The borehole gave the people both water and hope.

Under its species protection work, the NCF is also helping to save animals that are in danger. This includes supporting research on Cross River gorillas and protecting wild cats like lions and leopards in parks across Nigeria.

Justice R.I.B. Adebiyi, the Chairperson of the NCF National Executive Council, praised the foundation’s work in 2024. She said the planting of 184,000 trees was a major step forward for the Green Recovery programme.

The NCF also made a strong impact in the fight against climate change. The foundation took part in the COP29 meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, and organized local events like the Ibadan Climate Caravan Walk and the Osun Climate Awareness Walk. These actions show NCF’s work both at the community level and on the global stage.
