Lasmid Claims Ghana Influenced Nigerian Hit Songs

Ghanaian singer Lasmid Nathaniel Owusu, better known as Lasmid, has stirred fresh debate online after claiming that Ghana played a major role in shaping and promoting Nigerian hit songs.

In a recent interview with Hip TV, the Bad Boy crooner stated that most Nigerian songs became popular in Ghana before gaining massive recognition in Nigeria. He argued that Ghana’s music fans have always shown immense love for Nigerian artists, sometimes even more than for their own musicians.

“We love Nigerians so much, even more than ourselves. If a Nigerian drops a song, it will first blow in Ghana before it blows in Nigeria. Most Nigerian songs blew in Ghana before blowing back home,” Lasmid said.

Citing examples, he mentioned the hit single Who’s Your Guy by Spyro, explaining that the track gained massive airplay and popularity in Ghana long before Nigerians embraced it. “The song was very big in Ghana before Nigerians caught the wave. The love Ghana has for Nigeria has always been there,” he added.

Lasmid’s bold statement has reignited the long-standing Ghana vs Naija music debate, which has often sparked conversations about which country holds greater influence in the Afrobeats scene. Many fans have taken to social media to share mixed opinions, with some agreeing that Ghana helped popularize Nigerian songs, while others argued that Nigeria’s global dominance in music remains unmatched.

This isn’t the first time the topic has caused controversy. A few years ago, Nigerian artist Mr Eazi made similar comments, claiming that Ghanaian sounds had influenced Nigerian music. His statement triggered a major backlash, with many Nigerian fans accusing him of downplaying his country’s creativity and success.

While Lasmid’s remarks have stirred reactions once again, they also highlight the deep musical connection and mutual influence between both West African nations. Despite the rivalry, many believe that Ghana and Nigeria continue to inspire each other, contributing to the growing success of African music worldwide.
