Kwara Governor Approves 27.5% Allowance for Teachers Ahead of 2026 Budget Implementation
Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has approved a 27.5 per cent Teachers Specific Allowance (TSA) for educators across the state, effective January 2026. The announcement came shortly after the presentation of the ₦644 billion 2026 budget at the State House of Assembly.
According to a statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, the allowance applies to TRCN-certified teachers under the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) under CONKWESS I. Teachers without TRCN certification will receive 21 per cent.
“The 27.5% allowance applies to TRCN-certificated teachers across TESCOM and SUBEB under CONKWESS I, while 21% applies to those without TRCN,” the statement noted.
The decision follows persistent advocacy by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), which had threatened a statewide industrial action in December 2025 due to the government’s delay in implementing the TSA and the National Harmonised Teachers Retirement Age Act, which sets the retirement age at 65 years or 40 years of service.
With more than 25 other states already complying with the retirement age policy, the NUT had requested an emergency meeting with Governor AbdulRazaq before December 13, 2025, to avert a potential strike.
The governor also commended teachers for their indispensable role in education and nation-building, acknowledging their commitment and efforts in shaping the future of the state’s education sector.
This move is expected to boost teacher morale, encourage professional dedication, and improve educational outcomes across Kwara State.
