Kwara APC Says No Decision Yet on 2027 Governorship Zoning

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has clarified that no decision has been made regarding the zoning of its governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The clarification was made by the state party chairman, Sunday Fagbemi, during a radio interview monitored on Friday. His comments come amid growing demands from political stakeholders in the Kwara North Senatorial District, who are calling for power to shift to their region.

According to Fagbemi, the issue of zoning remains under the authority of the party’s national leadership, and no directive has been issued so far. He stressed that the state chapter has not discussed or finalized any zoning arrangement for the next election.

“If there will be any zoning, the national executive of the party will give the directive. But as of now, nothing of such is on the offing. We have not even discussed it because we don’t have the schedule decided yet. Anyone who has interest to vie for any position has the right to do so,” Fagbemi stated.

The chairman further noted that even if the Kwara chapter reaches a consensus on zoning, such a decision must be approved by the party’s national secretariat before it can take effect. “Even if we decide in Kwara that this is what we want, it is still subject to approval from the national secretariat,” he added.

This clarification comes as discussions over power rotation intensify, with some stakeholders insisting that the governorship should shift to Kwara North, which has not produced a governor since the country’s return to democracy in 1999.

The zoning debate continues to dominate political discourse in the state, especially as Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq nears the end of his second and final term, set to conclude in 2027.

With the governor’s tenure winding down, political activities are expected to increase as the ruling APC prepares for another round of elections to fill both state and national positions.
