Kunle Afod Addresses Sexual Exploitation in Nollywood, Stresses Talent Over Opportunism
Veteran Nollywood actor and philanthropist Kunle Afod has sparked debate with his recent remarks on allegations of sexual exploitation in Nigeria’s film industry. During an interview on Nollywood on Radio, Afod argued that such issues are not exclusive to the entertainment sector, comparing them to dynamics in professions like healthcare, banking, and sports.
“If you attend school, colleagues might ask you out. Nurses, bankers—everyone experiences this. Consent matters,” Afod stated, emphasizing personal agency. He acknowledged that some individuals may leverage relationships for opportunities but insisted that lasting success hinges on talent. “Without skill, even selling your body won’t sustain you. Talent always rises above,” he asserted.
Afod also challenged accusers to identify perpetrators openly: “Bring out those who claimed they were raped in the industry. We’re adults; consent exists.” His comments, however, risk downplaying the power imbalances faced by newcomers, where influential figures often control access to roles.
Encouraging self-reliance, Afod urged aspiring actors and filmmakers to take charge of their careers through independent production. “Everyone can produce movies. That’s the Nigerian way,” he said, advocating for creative autonomy in an industry often criticized for gatekeeping.
While Afod’s remarks highlight individual responsibility, they have ignited discussions about systemic challenges and the need for safer environments in Nollywood. Critics argue that talent alone cannot shield vulnerable actors from coercion, calling for broader structural reforms.
Afod, known for his philanthropic efforts and decades-long career, remains a prominent voice in Nollywood’s ongoing evolution.
