Kizz Daniel Reclaims Rights to Debut Album and Hit Songs
Afrobeats superstar Kizz Daniel has reclaimed full ownership of his debut album New Era and two of his hit singles, Yeba and Sofa. He announced on Monday via his official X handle, calling it a moment that means more than words can express.
In his post, he wrote: “From long nights in the studio to several meditations, finally, I now own every song on the ‘New Era album’ 2016 + Yeba & Sofa (singles). I got my masters back. This means more than words can explain. Thank you for riding with me. #NewEra #MyCatalog #Grateful.”
The victory is significant for Kizz Daniel, whose 2016 debut album New Era was released under G-Worldwide, the label he later left in 2017. After parting ways with G-Worldwide, he launched his own label Flyboy I.N.C., though he faced legal battles with the label’s CEO, Emperor Geezy, over the ownership of his past work.
Why did Kizz Daniel lose rights to his music before now?
Like many young artists signing early record deals, Kizz Daniel initially did not own the masters to his early work. This is a common issue in the music industry, where record labels often retain ownership of songs released under their contracts. After a legal dispute and years of negotiation, Kizz Daniel has now regained control of his foundational music catalog.
In a surprising twist, despite their earlier legal battle, Kizz Daniel announced in 2023 that Emperor Geezy had been appointed as the CEO of Flyboy I.N.C., signaling a possible reconciliation and a new chapter in their relationship.
This news has sparked celebration among fans who view the artist’s achievement as not only a win for Kizz Daniel, but also a symbol of empowerment for Nigerian musicians fighting for ownership of their work.
With full rights now back in his hands, Kizz Daniel can freely monetize, license, and perform his earlier music on his terms. It’s a big step for the Buga crooner as he continues to build his legacy in the music industry.
