Kiddwaya Faces Backlash Over Public Donation Appeal for Benue Victims
BBNaija star and billionaire heir, Kiddwaya, has come under heavy criticism following his public call for donations to support victims of the recent deadly attacks in Benue State. His appeal, made on June 18, 2025, through a heartfelt social media post, urged Nigerians to contribute whatever they could—₦500, ₦5,000, or more—to assist those affected by the massacre.
In his statement, Kiddwaya described the tragedy as a “Nigerian crisis” and said the Kiddwaya Foundation was mobilizing support to provide essentials such as food, shelter, and care for displaced families. He called for nationwide unity and generosity during this difficult time.
“This is not just a Benue crisis; it’s a Nigerian crisis. Now more than ever, we need to come together as one people,” he wrote, encouraging the public to join hands with his foundation’s relief efforts.
However, what began as a call for help quickly turned into controversy. Critics on social media accused Kiddwaya of hypocrisy, pointing to his frequent online displays of wealth—such as luxury cars, private jets, and lavish vacations—questioning why someone from a billionaire family would ask ordinary Nigerians to contribute financially.
Many users expressed frustration, suggesting he should personally fund the relief effort or quietly support his home state without public solicitation. Some questioned the legitimacy of the Kiddwaya Foundation, asking for evidence of past work, transparency, and accountability, especially after noticing a personal Gmail address in the appeal.
A few harsh responses included:
- “You pose in jets and champagne bars, but now it’s time for the masses to donate ₦500?”
- “Sell a mansion. Donate privately. Don’t make it PR.”
- “Where’s the track record of this foundation you speak of?”
- “You flaunt wealth and now expect poor Nigerians to fund your charity work?”
Despite the backlash, a few voices praised his effort, acknowledging that raising awareness and asking for help is still a commendable step, especially when directed at such a humanitarian crisis.
The criticism stems from the tragic incident on June 13, 2025, when armed attackers believed to be herdsmen stormed the farming communities of Yelewata and Daudu in Benue’s Guma Local Government Area. Over 200 lives were lost, with homes burnt and families displaced, marking one of the deadliest attacks in the region this year.
While Kiddwaya’s intent may have been to help, the public response underscores the growing scrutiny public figures face when their philanthropic actions appear inconsistent with their lifestyle. As Nigerians continue to grieve the massacre, calls for more genuine, transparent, and accountable support efforts are louder than ever.
