Kano APC and NNPP Crisis Poses Threat to 2027 Elections

Political tension is rising in Kano State as internal conflicts within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) threaten their stability ahead of the 2027 elections. The crisis in both parties could shape the political landscape of the state, potentially influencing the outcome of the next election.

In the NNPP, the recent suspension of Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila and three House of Representatives members has deepened divisions. The affected lawmakers have dismissed their suspension, calling it illegitimate and a move by a faction aligned with former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso. Meanwhile, another faction within the NNPP, led by Senator El-Jibril Doguwa, has downplayed the suspension, calling it insignificant.

Senator Kawu Sumaila, who enjoys strong grassroots support in Kano South, played a key role in the NNPP’s victory in 2023 after defecting from the APC. However, tensions within the party escalated after top APC figures, including National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, attended a convocation at Kawu’s university and his daughters’ wedding in Sumaila. The NNPP leadership viewed this as a sign of disloyalty and swiftly suspended Kawu, citing anti-party activities.

Political analysts warn that the NNPP risks losing its stronghold in Kano South if Kawu decides to return to the APC. Many of his supporters are loyal to him rather than the party, and his defection could significantly weaken the NNPP.

Meanwhile, the APC is also grappling with internal discord. A major point of contention is Ganduje’s insistence on retaining Abdullahi Abbas as the Kano State APC Chairman. Some party members oppose this move, seeing it as a power grab that could create further divisions. The crisis has also led to a face-off between Abbas and the Minister of State for Housing, Abdullahi Ata, who has threatened to resign. However, APC chieftains dismiss his threat, arguing that his departure would not impact the party’s chances in 2027.

Amid these power struggles, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf remains focused on securing re-election in 2027. He has emphasized that his performance in office will determine his political future, rather than party conflicts. Speaking at a women’s empowerment event, he reassured the people of Kano that his administration’s achievements would speak for themselves. He also warned the opposition against making inflammatory statements that could incite political unrest.

With both the APC and NNPP facing internal divisions, the political landscape in Kano remains uncertain. If unresolved, these crises could reshape party alliances and influence voter sentiments ahead of the 2027 elections.
