Iyabo Ojo Responds After EFCC Grills Her Over Spraying of Naira and Dollars at Daughter’s Wedding

Nollywood star Iyabo Ojo has opened up after being questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the spraying of naira and dollar notes at her daughter’s lavish wedding.

In a statement posted on her Instagram page, the popular actress and producer confirmed that she honored an invitation from the EFCC and visited their Lagos office on May 5, 2025. She said the meeting happened soon after she returned from the United Kingdom.

Her post follows growing public interest and widespread speculation about her involvement in the EFCC’s current crackdown on the abuse of the Nigerian currency.

Ojo explained that she decided to speak out after receiving a flood of calls and messages from concerned fans and associates who wanted to know if she was alright and what had really happened.

According to her, the EFCC officials questioned her about her personal background, acting career, and business activities. However, the main focus was on events that took place at her daughter’s wedding, where guests were seen spraying money — both naira and foreign currencies.

She expressed surprise when the officials showed her video clips from the wedding and explained that spraying currency at social events is considered a violation of Nigerian law.

“I honestly didn’t know spraying money, even foreign currency like dollars, is a crime,” Ojo said. “I thought only the abuse or tearing of the Naira was the issue.”

She said that after clarifying her side of the story, she was released the same day. However, her lawyer, O.I. Salami, remained as her legal representative in case the EFCC needed to contact her again.

Following the experience, the actress used her platform to warn the public: “I strongly advise everyone in Nigeria to stop spraying any form of money at events. It might be a cultural tradition, but the law sees it differently.”

She urged fellow Nigerians to be cautious and rethink certain traditions that could attract legal trouble.

The EFCC, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria, has recently stepped up its efforts to prevent the abuse of the Naira, especially at social gatherings, as part of a broader campaign to protect the country’s financial integrity.
