Inter and AC Milan Finalise Purchase of San Siro Ahead of New Stadium Project
Inter Milan and AC Milan have taken a major step toward building their own new stadium after completing the official purchase of the historic San Siro. The deal was signed with the Municipality of Milan, giving both clubs full property rights over the stadium and the land where it sits. This development comes a month after long discussions and approval from the Milan City Council.
The San Siro, also known as Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, has been the home to both clubs for decades and is one of the most famous football stadiums in the world. Inter and AC Milan, who share the stadium, have a combined football history of victories, including 10 UEFA Champions League titles between them. However, both clubs believe that a modern facility is necessary to meet today’s sporting, commercial, and fan experience standards.
The two clubs secured the purchase for €197 million after a lengthy debate and a tight vote at Milan City Hall. The sale had a deadline attached because if it had not been completed by next Monday, a protection order would have been placed on the stadium, limiting what could be changed or redeveloped. With the official sale now completed, the clubs can move forward with the redevelopment plans.
The new stadium project is estimated to cost around €1.2 billion and will transform a large section of the San Siro area. A new 71,500-seat stadium will be built next to the current one, and matches will continue to take place in the old stadium until construction is finished. This ensures that both Inter Milan and AC Milan can continue playing home games in Milan without disruption.
Once the new stadium is ready, the San Siro will be almost entirely demolished. The surrounding area will then be developed into green parks, office spaces, and entertainment zones. This redevelopment is expected to boost the local environment and create new economic opportunities for the city of Milan.
The clubs aim to complete the new stadium before Euro 2032, which will be jointly hosted by Italy and Turkey. Italy must present a list of stadiums for the tournament to UEFA by October next year. The new stadium could be submitted as one of the official venues if construction begins on time.
Meanwhile, the current San Siro still has major events in its schedule. It will host the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics on February 6, showing that its legacy continues even as change approaches. The stadium remains a symbol of Italian football culture and history.
