INEC Receives 151 Party Registration Requests, Resumes Voter Registration Nationwide
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has received 151 requests from different associations seeking to be registered as political parties in Nigeria.
The update was revealed by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, in a statement released on Thursday.
According to the commission, eight new letters of intent have been submitted since July 23, 2025, bringing the total number of party registration applications to 151.
“Details of these latest submissions, including their proposed party names, acronyms, logos, headquarters, and interim leadership, have been made publicly available on INEC’s official platforms,” Olumekun stated.
Party Registration Portal Now Active
INEC has now launched its dedicated online portal for party registration. The commission has also begun the shortlisting process to determine which associations meet the requirements to advance to the next stage of registration.
Further information on these applications will be released after the 16 scheduled bye-elections taking place in 12 states on August 16, 2025.
Continuous Voter Registration Resumes August 18
In another major development, INEC also announced the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise nationwide.
- Online pre-registration begins August 18, 2025
- In-person registration starts August 25, 2025
- Both will run simultaneously until August 30, 2026
The exercise will take place in 811 registration centres across the country, covering all 774 Local Government Areas and 37 State and FCT offices.
Operating hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
To assist citizens in finding the closest registration centers, INEC will launch an online CVR Live Locator tool on August 17, available at:

INEC Releases Help Resources
To support the registration exercise, INEC has:
- Published a 38-page document listing all registration centres
- Released dedicated helpline numbers for each state
- Promised to share instructional videos and guidelines next week
Olumekun emphasized that the registration procedures — both online and in-person — will follow the same structure used in the 2022 CVR exercise.
INEC is making key moves to expand Nigeria’s democratic space — not only by considering more political parties for registration but also by enabling citizens to register to vote ahead of upcoming elections. The commission encourages Nigerians to take full advantage of the year-long voter registration window.
