IGP Launches Safe Schools Initiative in Osun, Seeks Stakeholder Unity to Tackle Threats
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has called on all stakeholders in the education and security sectors to unite in protecting Nigerian schools from the rising threat of attacks. This appeal was made during the launch of the IGP’s Safe Schools Initiative and the formal inauguration of the Schools Protection Squad under the Osun State Police Command. The event took place in Osogbo, Osun State, on Monday.
Represented by Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone XI, Fred Emuobo, the IGP emphasized the urgent need for a collective and coordinated response to secure learning environments across the country. He noted that the Safe Schools Initiative is a proactive step designed to protect pupils, educators, and school facilities.
“As sanctuaries of knowledge and nurturing grounds for future leaders, our schools are pivotal to national development. Their security is paramount, and it is our collective responsibility to shield them from potential threats,” Egbetokun said in his speech.
To ensure the initiative’s success, the IGP announced that Commissioners of Police across the zone have been directed to hold strategic meetings with key stakeholders. These engagements aim to foster community-based collaboration for the effective protection of schools. He also stressed the importance of integrating technology and intelligence-led policing to enhance surveillance and response capabilities around educational institutions.
Egbetokun said the newly inaugurated Schools Protection Squad would undertake critical training for educators, administrators, and security personnel, enabling them to better understand and respond to security risks. “We mark a significant stride towards an inclusive approach to school safety,” he added, highlighting the initiative as a long-term commitment to educational protection.
At the launch, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, commended the Nigeria Police for placing children’s safety at the forefront. He praised the initiative and pledged the full support of the Osun State Government.
“No investment is too much when it comes to the future of our children,” Adeleke declared. “Our schools are sanctuaries of knowledge and the breeding ground for future leaders. Education remains a top priority for our government, and we are fully committed to this safety initiative.”
He noted that Osun State has recorded zero attacks on schools so far, and he urged all stakeholders to maintain this record by working together to sustain a peaceful environment for learning.
Also speaking at the event, Osun State Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Gotan, acknowledged the generally peaceful nature of the state but noted that isolated incidents of crises within school environments still required attention. He pointed out that such concerns were why the seminar attached to the initiative was essential.
“We will deliberate on critical issues, best practices, and innovative solutions to address the security challenges facing our schools,” Gotan said. “I am confident that the insights and experiences shared will empower us to develop effective strategies for safeguarding our educational institutions.”
The Safe Schools Initiative, led by the Nigeria Police Force, is part of a broader national strategy to enhance the safety and resilience of schools. It responds to concerns over school abductions and attacks, particularly in Northern Nigeria, and aims to foster collaboration between law enforcement, education authorities, parents, and local communities.
With the Osun State launch now complete, the initiative is expected to roll out in other states, furthering efforts to create a safe, secure, and enabling environment for Nigerian students.
